Matriarchy

Oil Paint, Batik Fabric, Foil, Adhesive, 60inx80in Matriarchy is a large-scale multi-media painting comprising patched batik fabrics, foils, and layers of thin oil paints. Photo references are from videos and images of group dance performances, that I took stills from, created sketches of, and then directly painted onto the surface. Within this direct process, I use no tracing and no outline. I embrace any mistakes made and allow them to exist in the work. Matriarchy is about the memory of the first time I was able to experience a female community. The comfort, the support, and the love that women share for one another.
