approx. 40inx40in, woven canvas, oil paint, foil, batik fabric. recycled frames, second hand carpentry nails. Fear is taught, and fear can be unlearned. By painting my biggest fear and then deconstructing the image -breaking it down, weaving it into something unrecognizable, and nailing the pieces to a frame-I am taking control over the fear itself. Nailing the woven canvas to the frame is a key act of control, forcing it to be held into place to be seen as something structured and contained rather than chaotic and overwhelming. This act of nailing the canvas, along with the deconstruction, demonstrates that with time and intention, fear can be controlled.
